For Washington D.C. locals like us, practicing our sports-related gun use is not a mere hobby but a necessity tied to our safety, assurance, and enjoyment. Currently, we face the unbearable predicament of commuting to either Maryland or Virginia to hone our skills and maintain licensure. This is not just inconvenient but also a grueling hardship, mentally, financially , and physically.
It’s high time our capital Washington, D.C. prioritizes the creation of a dedicated shooting range for sports-related gun use. The absence of such a facility in our city contradicts the 5.5% of the U.S. population participating in shooting sports nationally, as reported in the 2020 General Social Survey. Furthermore, according to the same source, shooting sports have shown a 31% increase in participation in the last 20 years, underlining the evident growth of interest in this physical discipline.
Having a local shooting range will not only provide convenience and aid in saving substantial amounts of time and money but will also boost the region’s economy by introducing lucrative business opportunities, paralleling the $16.9 billion direct spending generated by shooting sports across the nation (National Shooting Sports Foundation, 2019). Additionally, it will promote the regulated, responsible, and safe handling of firearms among users, in line with the Second Amendment rights granted to us.
